Five years ago, my career took an unexpected turn. As the Chief Marketing Officer at a local nonprofit, I was suddenly facing a job elimination thanks to COVID. I hated becoming a statistic, but I knew this loss was actually an opportunity.
After a brief ten-minute pity party, I realized that this could be the moment I’d been waiting for—a chance to start my own business. With 25 years of experience in marketing and a solid business background, I decided to take the leap rather than flood the market with resumes that might end up in a black hole.
Starting a business is a whirlwind of emotions and challenges. I quickly set to work creating a business plan, launching a website and defining the key practice areas for The Boyer Group. Networking became my lifeline as I reached out to the amazing professionals I had met throughout my career. Their support and insights were invaluable as I navigated this new venture.
The journey has been filled with ups and downs, and I’ve learned not to get too high with the highs or too low with the lows. One of the most important lessons has been the value of accessibility, customer service and operating with the highest ethical standards. These principles have become the foundation of The Boyer Group and have driven our success.
Starting a business is not for the faint of heart. It requires relentless effort and a willingness to embrace both triumphs and setbacks. I’ve learned to focus on what I do best and to recognize when to bring in other experts. You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room; you just need to surround yourself with the right people and listen to their insights.
Every day brings new challenges and opportunities. From building marketing strategies to engaging with clients and partners, the work is both demanding and deeply rewarding. The thrill of seeing our clients succeed is unmatched, and it’s what drives me to push forward, innovate and continuously improve.
